Call for Entry: 2009 Photo Review Photography Competition

Lesley Martin, Publisher of the Aperture Book Program, will be the juror for the 2009 Photo Review Photography Competition. The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 25th annual photography competition with a difference. Instead of only installing an exhibit that would be seen by a limited number of people, The Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its 2009 competition issue and on its website. Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of people all across the world and entrants will have a tangible benefit from the competition.

Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. And a major traveling exhibition in 2010 will feature entrants from 25 years of The Photo Review Competition.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country.

Awards include a $500 purchase prize for The Philadelphia Museum of Art, a copy of SilverFast HDR Studio digital camera RAW conversion software from LaserSoft Imaging ($499), a $270 gift certificate from Lensbabies for a Composer lens or other items on the Lensbaby.com webstore, a $250 gift certificate from Calumet Photographic, a 24"x50' roll of Museo Silver Rag ($240 value), camera bags from Lowepro, and $250 in cash prizes.

An entry fee of $30 for up to three prints, slides, or images on CD and $5 each for up to two additional images entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue. In addition, all entrants will be able to subscribe to The Photo Review for $35, a 20% discount.

All entries must be received by mail between May 1 and June 1, 2009.

You can download a prospectus - and view the 2008 and past winners - at http://www.photoreview.org/compete.htm. Or send a self-addressed, stamped business-size (#10) envelope to: The Photo Review, 140 East Richardson Avenue, Suite 301, Langhorne, PA 19047. For further information call 215/891-0214.

Unnatural Nature of Food: Orion Magazine Article

"The box from the dumpster gave me a clue: 'Product of Ecuador. Farm Raised.'

I am farm raised. I nurse a nostalgia for what those words used to mean. Holding that fetid box, I began to question my own clueless consumption. From a springboard both pure and naïve, I dove into all-you-can-eat shrimp."--Jim Carrier from All You Can Eat, March/April 2009 Orion Magazine

Call for Entry: June Issue of Fraction, The Unnatural Nature of Food

Group show for the June Issue of Fraction.

The Unnatural Nature of Food.

Food in our society has an interesting journey from, as the expression goes, "farm to table." Unknown farmers and hard working, often migrant laborers pick the food, package it and load it into trucks, ships and trains. It arrives at the supermarket where the average consumer is disconnected with (and often indifferent to) how their food got to his or her table. This call for entry is for work documenting all aspects of food, from production to consumption — from studies of agrarian communities, practices and lifestyles to exploration of how fast food has affected our culture and everything in between.

Specs: All images should be jpgs, 72 dpi, 1000 pixels on the longest side. Please email jpgs images titled lastname.firstname.image1 and so on to photographs@melaniemcwhorter.com. All images should be emailed with an additional document labeled lastname.firstname.text containing an artist statement about the project, if applicable, a title list and artist website address. Please list your name and email address at the top of the document.

There is no entry fee. The deadline is April 30th at midnight.
